Former CDS, Gen Irabor urges Nigerian Army to uphold democratic values, national security

The former Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabor, has urged the Nigerian Army to remain steadfast in upholding democratic values and national security.
Director of Army Public Relations, Major General Onyema Nwachukwu disclosed this in a press statement said General Irabor gave the powerful address during the West African Social Activities (WASA) 2024, on Saturday held at the Army Headquarters Garrison, Mogadishu Cantonment, Abuja.
General Irabor commended the sacrifices and dedication of personnel, encouraging them to remain vigilant and focused on their duties.
He highlighted the richness and cultural diversity of Nigerian soldiers as a source of strength for effectiveness, and noted that the Army has a long history of heritage and achievements, with significant contributions to national growth and development.
General Irabor emphasized the importance of synergizing with other security agencies, respecting the rules of law, and subordinating to civil authority.
He also urged the Army to continue fostering stronger partnerships to enhance collective capacity to address the nation’s security challenges.
In his remarks, the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, echoed General Irabor’s sentiments, emphasizing the significance of WASA as a platform to celebrate national heritage and promote unity, camaraderie, and esprit de corps among personnel and their families.
According to him, the event avails the Army the opportunity to thank God and appreciate Nigeria Army personnel who have distinguished themselves creditably for the peace and security of Nigerians.
He commended the collaborative efforts of all the sister services and other security agencies for the feat achieved in the various operations and called for a more stronger partnership to to enhance their operational effectiveness.
General Oluyede thanked the President, Commander-in-Chief of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu for his unwavering support and strategic guidance to the Nigerian Army.
Earlier in his welcome address, the Commander, Army Headquarters Garrison, Major General Koko Isoni took a trip down memory lane, recalling the rich history of WASA, which originated during World War II.
According to him, back then, it was a time for officers, soldiers, and their families to unwind and socialize, marking the end of the year’s activities. He emphasized that this tradition not only brings people together but also fosters a sense of camaraderie and brotherhood within the Nigerian Army.
He noted that WASA is a celebration that promotes unity and esprit de corps, reminding everyone of the importance of teamwork and togetherness.
The event, which brought together military personnel and their families, featured a range of activities, including a Tug of War, Female Soldiers Bike Display, and cultural performances showcasing Nigeria’s cultural diversity. General Irabor’s call to action serves as a reminder of the Nigerian Army’s crucial role in upholding democratic values and national security, and the importance of continued cooperation and support from other security agencies and the government.
