Ogun monarch condemns Taye Currency for ‘classless’ performance at Olubadan coronation

The Olu of Kemta Orile in Odeda Local Government Area of Ogun State, Oba Adetokunbo Tejuosho, has condemned Fuji star Taye Currency for using what he described as “disgusting and uncultured lyrics” during the coronation of Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadan.

In a viral clip from Friday’s ceremony at Mapo Hall, Currency was heard singing in Yoruba, “Were la fi n wo were,” translated as “we cure madness with madness.” The line has since sparked outrage online.

In a statement on Saturday, Oba Tejuosho said the musician failed to accord the Yoruba tradition and sacredness of the coronation the respect it deserved.

“The throne of our ancestors is not a stage for mockery, nor the coronation of a great monarch a subject for careless entertainment,” the monarch said.

“Kingship is sacred, adorned with honour and guarded by tradition. It demands reverence, dignity, honour, class and the utmost respect from all who stand in its presence.”

He described the lyric as “classless and unbefitting,” stressing that music in the royal court should be a vessel of homage to culture and authority. He also faulted the organisers for inviting Currency to perform at an event attended by President Bola Tinubu, governors, diplomats and traditional rulers.

According to him, artistes such as King Sunny Ade, Ebenezer Obey, Wasiu Ayinde (K1 De Ultimate) or Rasheed Merenge would have been more suitable for such an occasion.

The performance has continued to generate mixed reactions, with some social media users insisting Ibadan-born Currency was a fitting choice to represent the city, while others argued that more experienced Fuji legends should have mounted the stage.

Oba Ladoja’s coronation attracted dignitaries from across Nigeria, marking his historic elevation as the first Nigerian to have served as senator, governor and king.
